An Occasion for a Vintage Horn
The Christmas season will be here soon. This is my favorite time with my old Euphoniums. TUBA Christmas events provide a wonderful venue to break out some of the old instruments I don’t use on a regular basis.
If you have not ever participated in TUBA Christmas, you should give it a try. If you are a cornet player beg, barrow or steal an old euph, baritone or an Eb Tuba to play. The music is available in treble clef so the fingerings are the same as on cornet (even for the Eb Tuba in T.C.). Just make sure your old instrument is tuned to A=440 and you will be all set.

The Madison TubaChristmas will be held on Saturday December 20th, registration and rehearsal is at 1:00, master class given by Prof. John Stevens starts at 12:00. the concert is at 2:30 in the Capitol Rotunda. Registration, rehearsal, and the Master Class are held at the First United Methodist Church at 203 Wisconsin Ave, Madison

Steve, could you possibly give us some more information on the Madison (Wisconsin) Tuba Christmas.
Is it a one time event? is it open to everyone? is there a level of proficiency requirement?
My goal is to never go to Tuba Christmas with the same horn! So far, I’ve gone with a King 4valve raincatcher, a Conn Eb helicon, an ophicleide, and a Lehnert toilet seat tuba. This year I plan to go with a Frank Eb raincatcher. Next year. . . who knows!
I have seen several Tuba Christmas concerts and other Tuba events and have enjoyed all of them. The Santas playing tubas in Christmas concerts are the most enjoyable.
I have an old E flat helicon and if I get a chance, I’ll join a Tuba Christmas group.
